Hints & Tips page

  • Don't be tempted to "knock a nail in" Joints always work loose around them, and the nail causes problems when the item has to be restored
  • Never use glass paper on a drawer to make it fit: it will result in excessive wear in the future. A plane gives a clean surface, and candle wax will help it slide.
  • Don't use a modern sillicone spray-on type polish on anything more than 50 years old. Buy or make some traditional beeswax polish, and get rubbing.
(pre 1780, linseed oil may be more appropriate)
  • Adopt a shoe box. Keep in it a pencil and some masking tape. Odd pieces knocked off items of furniture can be labelled and safely stored, saving a great deal of cost in restoration
